Connected Bluetooth and played music from my iPod. Sounds good! Have yet to hook up an antenna for listening to aviation chatter, hence the low-stars for reliability and performance, as I don’t know yet.January 12, 2019Purchased

1 month agoDurability3 / 5Reliability2 / 5Performance1 / 5Ease Of Use4 / 5Value2 / 5Would You Recommend?NoExcellent idea, good design, fair quality, poor performanceAmazingly, this scanner does nothing really well. My hangar is about 1/3 of a mile from the transmitter for ATC and ATIS. Inside my hangar even with the doors closed my cheapo handheld has no problem picking up ATIS, ground vehicles, and aircraft reporting 20 miles out. This scanner can not pick up any of that even with the doors wide open where I can literally see the ATIS antenna a few thousand feet away . Likewise I have an old junkie AM/FM radio that can pick up most local stations. Again, in FM mode this scanner can pick up nothing.
To get any reception with this scanner, I have to put it on an extension cord and sit it outside my hangar on a stool.
I find it difficult to believe how pathetic the tuner or pre-amplifier is in this scanner.
Other than the fact that it has no reception, the interrupt function and scanning work ok.December 31, 2018Would You Recommend?NoAir Scan disappointmentMy disappointment with the radio is that it does not have battery capability. I went back to read the promo information, and no where is it mentioned that there is no battery backup capability.December 31, 2018Purchased

1 month agoDurability4 / 5Reliability4 / 5Performance3 / 5Ease Of Use3 / 5Value4 / 5Would You Recommend?YesGood Value - But needs better antennaThe Sporty's Air Scan does the job as advertised. If you are using inside I strongly recommend using another antenna. I'm four miles from the control tower and unless the scanner is near an outside wall or using an external antenna, I cannot pick up much.
I'm going to try an aftermarket outside external antenna to see if that does any better. It would be ideal if Sporty's offered a complete kit for something like that as I have to piece things together, buy the cable, antenna, connectors, etc. to get the antenna higher up and outside the house. That is not a big deal if you have some knowledge of radio electronics, but is a challenge for those that have to jump into it cold.
Sporty's does have some of this, but I'm concerned about outside exposure for the extension cables offered. The connections will need to be waterproofed, etc. and the cabling needs to be UV stable. I'm not sure that is the case. More details in the advertising would be helpful for the auxiliary items such as these.December 11, 2018Purchased
1 month agoDurability3 / 5Reliability3 / 5Performance3 / 5Ease Of Use2 / 5Value3 / 5Would You Recommend?NoOne big drawbackI generally like this radio. I just wish I could temporarily disable some of the frequencies stored in memory when I put it in scan mode. As it is the frequencies I don't want in the scan have to be permanently deleted then memorized again if I want them in the scan later.
I remember the old scanners from the 1970's that had mechanical buttons to enable/disable them in the scan. Miss that.December 9, 2018Performance1 / 5Ease Of Use4 / 5Value1 / 5Would You Recommend?NoPoor Aviation ReceptionAfter checking that KVRB airport is exactly 5 nm from my home, and confirming reception was available on a handheld King 99 in my second floor office I purchased the Scanner.
Aviation transmissions are barely audible, and when they are they are significantly masked by background static hiss. Squelch mutes both background noise and communications and does not provide improvement . This applies to transmissions from the ground and air. Inability to use squelch precludes useful scanning. Scan stops completely at frequencies that may briefly have a transmission, due to the background hiss. If the hiss is silenced, no communications are found during the scan. .
I was able to effect slight improvement varying antenna extension suggesting a mismatch. Varying the scanner location slightly improved reception.
Overall I cannot recommend the unit. I incidentally see little use for the AM and FM bands or Bluetooth connection. .
I will experiment further, but will likely return the unit.December 9, 2018Purchased
