Bluetooth Radio with AVIATION INTERRUPT™

Sporty’s Air Scan® Aviation Radio/Scanner gives pilots and aviation buffs two radios in one. With our exclusive Aviation Interrupt feature, you can listen to a ball game, talk radio, or music and never miss an aviation transmission. Equipped with Bluetooth, the Air Scan can easily pair with a phone or iPad for playing music from your favorite app. Perfect for your home office, the desk at your FBO, or your workbench in the hangar, the Air Scan is an easy way to monitor aviation traffic while still listening to your favorite music.

Memory

Store up to 10 different frequencies from each tunable source using the Preset feature. This allows you to quickly scroll through your local frequencies without having to type them in every time. The 10 aviation presets are used for Aviation Interrupt feature.

Aviation Interrupt™

While listening to your favorite AM/FM station or Bluetooth/Aux source, the Air Scan silently scans up to 10 preset channels for activity. When a signal is detected on any of these channels it interrupts the music and plays the aviation transmission. When the transmission ends, the Air Scan returns to the music.

Bluetooth/Aux In

Don’t want to listen to FM or AM radio stations? Use the Bluetooth feature to pair your phone or tablet to the radio for listening with your favorite app. You can also use a standard 3.5 aux input cable (sold separately) to plug in your phone or iPad if it has a 3.5mm headphone jack.

External Speaker
Use the 3.5mm headphone jack to connect the Air Scan to external speakers. Here at Sporty's Pilot Shop, we connect an Air Scan to the ramp speakers so linemen never miss a radio call. Also great for surround sound systems or noise canceling headphones.

Package includes Air Scan radio, 100-240V wall plug, telescoping BNC antenna and user guide. Requires wall plug for operation (no batteries).

Air Scan Features:

  • Aviation Interrupt
  • 10 priority aviation memory locations
  • Telescoping antenna with aviation-compatible BNC connector
  • External power jack
  • External speaker jack
  • Auxiliary input jack
  • AM band 520 – 1710 kHz
  • FM band 88 – 108 MHz
  • Aviation Band VHF 117.975 – 137.000 MHz (25 kHz spacing)
  • Bluetooth wireless music streaming
  • Stereo speakers
  • Squelch & volume control knobs

Simplified Programming Instructions

Programming the AirScan radio is similar to programming a car radio. To save a frequency to a preset location:

  1. After turning the Air Scan on, choose the source of the frequency you want to store (AM, FM, or Airband).
  2. Type in the frequency you wish to store.
  3. Press the preset button once to enter into preset mode.
  4. Press and hold the number of preset location where you want to store the frequency.
  5. After holding the number for 2 seconds, the Air Scan will beep and exit preset mode, indicating that the frequency was stored correctly.

To recall a preset frequency:

  1. After turning the Air Scan on, choose the source type of the frequency you want recall (AM, FM, or Airband).
  2. Press the preset button once to enter into preset mode.
  3. Press the number of the preset location you wish to access.
  4. Air Scan will automatically exit preset mode after 3 seconds on inactivity.

Pro Tip:

Reception for scanners is mostly based on line-of-sight. Scanners located deep inside metal buildings will have poor reception. Two rules of thumb for antenna placement: (1) The higher the better and (2) Outside is better than inside.  If you are 10 miles from an airport in a hilly area or there are many tall buildings between you and the airport, you probably won't get the control tower.  However, you may hear aircraft in the pattern. Testing at Sporty's revealed that we could get transmissions over 25 miles away with an Air Scan in the third-floor control tower. At ground level, 15 miles was common for planes at 1000 AGL. Remote antennas can improve your reception. Learn more about reception and external antenna options in this article.

Also, be sure to set your squelch properly, so as not to block out radio calls. The right setting is just high enough to cut out static, but no higher.

Excellent Product
This Radio / Scanner works excellently. I installed this Air Scan Radio in the shop portion of my hanger. I added the Coax cable to the external antenna. The external antenna is approximately 32 feet above the ground. We have some tall trees in the area where the antenna is installed and this combination still works works excellently. I get great FM radio reception. I also get great air band reception. I hear airplanes on the CATF for our airport and other airports as far away as 30 to 35 miles. I can hear the Tower and ATIS of a Class D airport 10 miles to our south thru the tall trees by our hanger.

Great Aviation Radio
Bought this Air Scan recently and have been using it with an outside car radio antenna. It works Great!!! I receive the local airport nearby and the military airport seven miles away including the tower as well as LA Center, etc. This one is far better than the previous Air Band model.

Better than reviewed by most
I almost didn't order this radio because of the reports of poor reception. However, knowing a thing or two about antennas, I decided to give it a try. First though, this radio has just the feature set that I wanted. I set two frequencies into air-band memory (ctaf & 121.5). I use it on either FM or BT (SPOTIFY from phone). When set up I get to hear my favorite music and local air-band as wanted. Now, back to the antenna. Out of the box I thought it was going to have to be returned. Reception and audio quality was poor. But I was in a metal hangar. So using a 30' length of coax (RG58) with a BNC on one end and a 6' length of wire on the other, I made my own external antenna. This made all the difference. The radio FM sound quality is now clear and strong as is the Air-band. I'm thrilled with the radio even though I'm picky on clear good sounding audio.

Not worth the money
The FM radio works great as far as Aviation everything is staticy weak. I live 3 miles from the airport and I can hardly pick anything up, I don't know if it's the antenna problem or what but I'm disappointed in the product it doesn't work like they were saying it would. I was hoping I'd be able to hear air traffic instead of nothing but static

I like it a lot. The presets are a bit unintuitive, but other than that it’s great.

A little pricey. Needs better scan features.
Was easy to set up. Sound was good. Would like to be able to scan ONLY the preset stations. Scanning the entire aviation band takes too long to be worth-while. Also need a skip or lockout function in scan mode or scan stops at first active frequency (awos for example). A little pricey considering i have a $69.00 Bearcat receiver that will do all of this, but is more difficult to set up.

Does anyone make a portable version (battery powered) of this for use while traveling?
ANTHONY S. on Jun 12, 2018
BEST ANSWER: Yes my mechanic has one. He presets it to scan only the local channels at KEUG. Don't know where he bought it
Is it 110V only or does it accept batteries?
David M on Nov 13, 2017
BEST ANSWER: It is only 110V.
Is there a way to scan only the preset channels instead of the entire aviation frequency band? I know that if your listening to another radio source it will do that with aviation interrupt on but I was wondering if you could just keep the scanner searching the preset channels only.
Fast212 on Dec 30, 2018
BEST ANSWER: Yes, set the frequencies in the presets 0-9 and then press the aviation interrupt. It will scan only the present channels. Please note that the frequencies do not change when scanning. The display will just read interrupt on.
Suppose it sits on your desk and paired to your phone, can you use the AirScan as a speakerphone? Obviously it would need to have a microphone for that. This would be a pretty cool feature, and the keypad just looks right to dial a phone number!
A shopper on Nov 13, 2017
BEST ANSWER: The radio is a streaming device only. You can not use the phone like you would with a hands free device.
Does this device remain on a certain frequency or does it continue to scan to other frequencies? If you set it to a certain frequency, will it stay on that frequency until changed?
Holly H on Jul 10, 2018
BEST ANSWER: If you sent the frequency and do not turn on the aviation interrupt it will stay on that frequency until it is manually changed.
Backlight is too bright in low light...Is there a way to dim or turn it off?
A shopper on Jun 25, 2018
BEST ANSWER: No, there is no control for the backlight.
Can you hook up a UHF outside antenna to this scanner ?
A shopper on Nov 13, 2017
BEST ANSWER: But since Airband is VHF, a VHF outside antenna would work much better.
can this radio tie into internet system without useing ipad ?
gary j on Nov 13, 2017
BEST ANSWER: This radio does not connect to the internet. You can pair it to a blue tooth device and then stream music.
Does this unit have true stereo output rather than the monoral output my earlier model Air Scan has?
MICHAEL J C. on Nov 13, 2017
BEST ANSWER: This answer is incorrect. While the AirScan has 2 speakers, and a 2 channel 3.5mm output jack, when listening to an FM radio station, the output is NOT stereo. This was confirmed with an oscilloscope (and by listening to the FM radio). I previously posted this here, but evidently Sporty's has prevented it from being viewed.
Where’s my $40.00 rebate?
Tom M on Aug 13, 2019
BEST ANSWER: There was not a $40.00 rebate. The price has been reduced by $40.00
