Introduced in the late 1930s as a transport aircraft, the Douglas DC-3 was adapted from its intended design to become the first successful commercial airliner. Thanks to commercial operators like Pan-Am, Delta, Braniff, and United, the type experienced rapid expansion to customers, helping develop the cargo craft into a passenger success.
During its service life, the DC-3 had a capacity of between 20-30 passengers onboard and a crew of three in the cockpit. Range was over 1,500 miles with passengers or cargo onboard and the aircraft is powered by a pair of Pratt and Whitney R-1830 Twin-Wasp radial engines. Propellors are tri-bladed, Hamilton Standard S23 series, with hydraulic constant speed actuation and 1,200 hp at their disposal. Top speed is over 250 mph, rate of climb is 1,140 ft/min, and the altitude ceiling is 23,200 ft.
Flown by Quantas Airways during the 1940s, the Douglas DC-3 would fulfil flights within mainland Australia, Pacific Islands, and even Hong Kong. Painted with vibrant red and white striped fuselage, the polished aluminum underbelly and wings are an iconic sight for anyone, with this one also sporting the Australian flag and registration VH-EBU. Die-Cast version has an authentic paint scheme, etched panel lines, pad-printed decals, and detailed landing gear with rotating tail wheel. Also includes a display stand to show the model in flight.
