Developed from the preceding MD-80 family of aircraft, the MD-90 was a 5-abreast, T-tail design which would compete with the rival Boeing 757 type. Entering service in 1995 with Delta Air Lines, it was quieter, more efficient, and up to date with electronic flight instruments. With one decade of production, 116 MD-90s would be made, serving until 2020 with dozens of operators across the globe.
Configured with the typical 150-170 passengers onboard and two crew members, the MD-90 was capable of flying nearly 2,000 miles nonstop. At the back of the fuselage are two IAE V2525 turbofans, which provide up to 56,000 lbs combined thrust on takeoff, 30% more than its predecessor. Resulting top speed is 582mph, altitude ceiling is 37,000ft, and maximum takeoff weight is 156,000 lbs.
Operated by Reno Air, this MD-90 fulfilled medium-range flights in the western United States during the 1990s. Delivered in 1997, it would see service until 2000, where American Airlines would purchase the midwestern operator. Die-Cast version has an accurate paint scheme, etched panel lines, pad-printed decals, and detailed landing gear. Measures 4.5”l with a 3.25” wingspan at 1:400 scale.
