The North American X-15 rocket powered research aircraft bridged the gap between manned flight within the atmosphere and outside it in a way that will never be forgotten. Completing its initial test flights in 1959, the X-15 became the ever first winged aircraft to attain the blistering speed of Mach 4, 5, and 6, (or 4, 5, and 6 times the speed of sound). Required for high-speed travel, the X-15 had to be built to withstand aerodynamic temperatures greater than 1,200 degrees Fahrenheit. As a result, the X-15 was fabricated using a special high-strength nickel alloy named Inconel X. Air launched from a modified Boeing B-52 Stratofortress aircraft, the X-15 required conventional aerodynamic control surfaces as and special reactive “thruster” reaction control rockets to enable control in extremely thin atmosphere. Die-Cast version is modeled after the X-15 located in the Smithsonian Air and Space Museum, with etched panel lines, printed detailing, and clear display stand. Measures 4.5”l with a 2” wingspan at 1:144 scale.
