Next generation portable GPS

With charts and 3D vision

Garmin

The all-new aera 660 is the ultimate all-in-one aviation device - like a glass cockpit in the palm of your hand. It combines complete navigation features, digital charts, hazard alerts and optional in-flight weather with a beautiful 5” touchscreen. It’s perfect for preflight planning, yoke mounting in the cockpit or for backup.

Made for aviationVFR Sectional

Unlike most tablets, the aera 660 is ideally suited to the cockpit. Its rugged case and built-in GPS/GLONASS receiver means you can just grab it and go flying. Once in the air, you’ll appreciate the bright, sunlight-readable screen – even if you’re flying in a low wing airplane on a summer day. The responsive touchscreen and fast map redraws make it easy to use right out of the box, with familiar Garmin features like nearest airport, VNAV, and direct-to navigation.

Powerful hazard alertsHazards

The aera 660 does a lot more than just moving maps and flight plans, with automatic alerts for nearby terrain, obstacles and traffic – even audio callouts. Smart Airspace highlights airspace close to your current altitude, while WireAware wire-strike avoidance technology warns of potentially dangerous obstacles for helicopters and low altitude airplanes.

Synthetic visionsynthetic vision

Bring the outside world to life with Garmin’s incredible 3D Vision display. You’ll see terrain, obstacles, traffic, and airport runways, which creates a complete picture of the outside environment. Add a Garmin GDL 50 with AHRS and you can even have a backup attitude indicator.

Full Electronic Flight BagEFB

While Garmin’s data-driven basemaps are perfect for everyday flying, sometimes you need to consult the actual chart. The aera 660 includes full IFR/VFR charts (United States), fuel prices (United States), SafeTaxi diagrams and much more – it’s a complete Class I/II EFB solution. See your airplane’s position overlaid on a sectional chart, or brief the approach with actual FAA approach plates. European charts and basemaps are also available for an additional charge, making the aera 660 a truly worldwide navigator.

Connect to Garmin avionicsGTX

Besides its powerful built-in features, the aera 660 can also connect to a variety of Garmin avionics: receive subscription-free weather and traffic from a portable GDL 39, GDL 50 or from a panel-mount GTX 345 ADS-B Receiver; control your VIRB video camera; or send flight plans from GTN and GNS series navigators to the 660.

Built-in WiFiWifi

Database updates are easier than ever – simply connect to a WiFi network and start downloading. Plus, more affordable database options for the US, Mexico and Canada make those cross-border trips a button push away. You can even navigate direct-to street intersections with the optional City Navigator database.

Mirroring the iPad world, Garmin has made it easier and cheaper than ever to keep your databases up to date. Downloads start at just $29.95, but the real value is the bundle pricing. Garmin offers a complete United States database subscription for just $149.95/year. This price includes airspace, frequencies, airport information, complete IFR/VFR charts, taxi diagrams, AOPA Airport Directory, obstacles and terrain. It's almost $1000 less expensive than previous database purchases, and the 660's built-in WiFi means you don't have to connect to a computer to download files.

Unit came with expired database
Can't believe Sporty's sent me unit with database that expired back in January 2020. Would not recommend purchasing unit from Sporty's. Haven't heard back from them yet, but to be fair it's only been 2 days since I've received unit. I don't see why I should have to pay Garmin another $150 to update a brand new unit. Sporty's should have made me aware of this prior to purchase. Am I missing something here?? Please correct me if I am.

Response from Sporty's Pilot Shop
Thank you for the review. Garmin loads the most current database on the unit when the unit is made, but they realize that updates might happen between the time of manufacture and the time of sale. As such, Garmin units come with one free update. Set up your account on fly.garmin.com.

Comparison of Aera 660 to my old GPS Map 296
Retired my 296 for 660. 660 has many good new functions but 2 major that were on 296 not on 660 is cross track (xtk) field does not display L or R of course and resolution on 660 only down to 0.1 nm 296 displayed in feet below 0.1. 2nd can not download flight logs to PC flight book that was possible on 296.

Most likable features of 660 or not on 296:
1.Touch screen Keypad makes data entry faster.
2. Also has IFR enroute & sectional charts positioning.
3. Has IFR approach plates geo ref. but screen too small to see entire plate must pan.
4. Garmin map page also displays high terrain area colors.
5. Terrain page also has profile view and compass arc.
6. Synthetic vision 3D page with high terrain colors & HSI.
7. Safe taxi airport diagrams on map display.
8. 8 data fields on map display vs. 4 on 296.
9. When connected to internet WIFI weather Nexrad, satellite and metars can be displayed on route.
10. Faster screen updates show heading turns smoothly.
11. More data field selections: enroute safe altitude, minimum safe altitude and height above ground.
12. Can power 660 with external USB port battery to extend internal battery if no panel power.
13. Was able to transfer 296 stored way points and routes to 660 using Garmin Basecamp app.
14. More airport info and fuel prices captured when on WIFI.

GPS Map 296 features more likable or not on 660:
1. No external power voltage meter or low volts alarm to monitor plane bus voltage on 660.
2. No moving average speed or max speed data field on 660.
3. 296 has more user data field pages. No data fields on on 660 terrain page and 296 also has position page with 8 more data fields.
4. 296 can show a split display with map & HSI with 4 data fields.
5. No software apps to download 660 flight log data to a PC logbook.
6. 296 had automobile road routing kit for use after landing. 660 does not.
7. 296 displayed estimated battery time remaining.

Features of 660 that can be improved or not available:
1. Compass arc bug, track log trace and runway extended center lines could be solid or bold to be more visible when TOPO on.
2. Airplane symbol .on synthetic vision could be smaller to show more terrain.
3. HSI on synthetic vision doe not show full compass rose.
4. VNAV glide slope shuts off at 500ft. Would like slope down to target.
5. Track up display on enroute and sectional charts would be nice.

MFD for GNX 375 GPS
The avionics shop is connecting the Area 660 RS 232 ports to my GNX 375 Panel GPS with the hard wire connector and AirGizmo Panel Mount. Inflight GEO-Chart overlays of IFR approaches are great. Weather and Traffic display from the ADSB connection to the GNX 375 along with the flight plan sync and map-sync on approach is great with the GNX 375.

Great unit !
Awesome unit upgraded from a Garmin 296 handheld unit and a 430 in my other plane I had and sold. Haven’t flown with it yet but have been using in sim mode and just generally playing with it for now and so far I’m extremely impressed with the speed it acquires the satellites and the many features it has its very easy to use ,flight planning is simple and straightforward. All in all it is a better and easier unit to operate than the 430w I had, bigger display brighter and it’s a a touch screen to boot. Maps pages are awesome I love the sectional display for situational awareness and the ability to have vfr or ifr charts. AOPA taxi way info also gives you a accurate description of your position on the field. Not sure about updates and costs will just have to see but they seem fairly reasonable and easy to get from Garmins web site. Can’t wait to fly with it !

Haven’t had a chance to use in flight yet. Software is less intuitive than Foreflight but I like the unit and see it as a solid backup GPS. While I like Forflight on my iPad working with the Sentry ADS-B GPS unit, at times the WiFi and or GPS connection fails. Hence the purchase of this unit for a more reliable GPS function.

I love the Aera 660!!
I absolutely love this GPS. It integrates perfectly with my GDL52R so I have ADS-B traffic and weather. Also, since my GDL52R has AHRS, the Aera can be used as a standby attitude indicator. My aircraft isn’t IFR but having an ADI Is comforting.

Does this gps supply the nmea output data to drive a auto pilot?
Tom H on Aug 11, 2016
BEST ANSWER: Yes, the same NMEA 0183 as the older Aeras and GPSMAP units do.
Why use a garmin portable GPS (like the AERA 660) instead of an ipad with foreflight? Is there an advantage of the garmin GPS over ipad with foreflight?
A shopper on Feb 23, 2017
BEST ANSWER: I have both a Garmin Aera 660 and an Ipad Mini with Foreflight. I fly a Vans RV-8 and while flying mostly rely the 660 for several reasons. It has a much brighter higher resolution display that can be easily read in full sunlight. It never overheats. I actually have the 660's brightness turned down to 75% and its far easier to see and read then the Ipad using Foreflight. The touch screen on the 660 is way more responsive then the Ipad. Especially in turbulence or under high work loads. The menu on the Garmin is really easy to move through. The Ipad with Foreflight is a better flight planning tool prior to flight because you can easily connect to the internet via wifi or data. The 660 is connected to a Garmin GTX 345 All-In-One Transponder with ADSB In and Out via the Garmin Bare Wire Cable. I get weather and traffic with audio alerts. The Ipad/Foreflight is connected to the GTX 345 via Bluetooth and also provides traffic and WX. Both are great but if I could only have one in the cockpit while flying it would be the Garmin Area 660.
FAA aproved primary source ? Or just for back up ? What is the main difference from stratus . Thanks
A shopper on Aug 5, 2016
BEST ANSWER: No, it is not an approved primary source of navigation for IFR.

The Aera 660 is quite different from the Stratus devices. The Stratus is a GPS and ADS-B receiver that works with the ForeFlight appon an iPad or iPhone (and nothing else!). Stratus has no display of its own. This Aera 660, on the other hand, is a GPS receiver with its own display. You can enter flight plans, and see you position and planned route on various types of maps and charts. However, to display weather and traffic you need one of Garmin's ADS-B receivers, such as the GDL 39 series or you can subscribe to XM weather, which requires a different receiver and a paid subscription.
Waiting and waiting for the Aera 660 to have SXM weather before I buy one. When will this happen?
A shopper on May 9, 2017
BEST ANSWER: It is now available with the GDL 51 receiver.

Can you get weather notifications from remote areas?
A shopper on Jul 7, 2017
BEST ANSWER: To receive weather information you will need to the GDL-39 with the Area 660. The weather would be available when you are airborne and receiving ADS-B information.
Can the Aera 660 display, upload and download flight plans to and from a GTN 650 via FligthStream over the WiFi or will it only display ADS-B Weather and Traffic?
Sean G on May 1, 2017
BEST ANSWER: The Aera 660 can connect to the GTN 650 via a cable connection. The 660 is supplied with ADS-B data via a bluetooth connection to the GDL-39 ADS-B in receiver.
What is the cost of updates? and how frequent to keep current?
ThePackardMan on Apr 26, 2017
BEST ANSWER: The pricing for the updates are listed at https://fly.garmin.com/fly-garmin/support/pricing. Just enter the 660 and site will give you the price information. Charts would be updated on the same schedule as the paper charts.

Does the 660 fit into the Aera 500 Panel Dock?
I currently have the 500 in the Panel, and does the 660 come with an optional Pacific Database?
A shopper on Mar 13, 2017
BEST ANSWER: The 660 will not fit into the 500 panel dock. The 660 ships with the Americans database. The Pacific Database can be purchased from Garmin
Will the flight plan function allow me to input Victor airways like GP on the iPad - and automatically backfill all the interim waypoints from entry to exit from the airway?
A shopper on Jan 25, 2017
BEST ANSWER: I don't recall being able to plug in an airway and have it produce a plot to fly. I think airways will only show up on the graphic map as a "here it is." I only use mine for VFR so I did not really seek to use airway data.
Will this unit stay charged using 12 v ship's power unlike an iPad using Garmin Pilot which still slowly discharges?
A shopper on Jan 24, 2017
BEST ANSWER: Yes it will.
Does flight planning allow for the use of victor airways - put in a victor airway entrance and exit and it will populate all the interim waypoints?
A shopper on Jan 24, 2017
BEST ANSWER: No. It requires you enter each waypoint where there is a change of direction.
I fly a G100 equipped aircraft. Will one subscription for updates cover both or is another required for this unit?

Bill M on Jul 10, 2019
How does the bare wire kit plug into my GDL 52 unit for power and data? It only comes as bare wires and no male USB to plug? I've reviewed the Pilots Guide Appendix D but is confusing.
Paul H on Jan 24, 2020
BEST ANSWER: The Aera 660 connects to the GDL52 via Bluetooth. The Aera is not powered through the GDL52. I’m not really sure how my shop powered the Aera.
