Our award-winning courses have helped over 50,000 pilots learn to fly or add a rating, but we're never standing still. The Sporty's Academy team is constantly adding new content and innovative features to make our Learn to Fly Course the best training product in aviation. It's everything you need to prepare for your written test and earn your pilot certificate, with ground school, test prep, and real world training - all in one easy-to-use package.

10 reasons pilots prefer Sporty's courses:

1. Save time and money

For the cost of a single flight lesson, our course will save you hours of time in the air and hundreds of dollars. The step-by-step video lessons are better than ground school, helping you prepare for your next flight lesson ahead of time so you spend less time reviewing and more time learning.

Completion certificate2. Get your written test endorsement

Ace the written with our interactive test preparation program. You can create customized study sessions from the actual FAA test questions and see the right and wrong answers, plus plain English explanations written by our team of CFIs. Then, take a practice test that simulates the real knowledge exam you'll have to pass. We’ll even give you the flight instructor endorsement to take the written test—right from the course! You can take this endorsement to the FAA testing center, and log it in your ForeFlight logbook.

3. Pass all your tests—guaranteed!

Our course is so complete we guarantee you’ll pass all three tests: the written, oral and flight. Incredible 3D animations and dynamic in-flight video make complicated subjects like aerodynamics and weather easy to understand, so you’ll impress the examiner. Plus, our Airman Certification Standards Study Guide cross-references every required task to the videos, making it easy to review for the checkride.

4. Be ready for real world flying

Learning to fly means a lot more than just passing a test. That’s why Sporty’s course goes beyond the textbook to teach you real world flying, making you a safer, more confident pilot. Special Air Facts segments with renowned aviation author Richard Collins are packed with no-nonsense tips you can use after the checkride.

5. Includes the new Airman Certification Standards

Sporty's courses are famous for being the most up-to-date and complete training products available. That focus continues with the FAA's introduction of new Airman Certification Standards (ACS). Our Learn to Fly Course includes the full text of this document - your guide to the checkride - and cross-references each task to the video segments. Our course also emphasizes deep understanding instead of just memorizing questions, something the FAA now discourages.

6. Covers Private, Recreational and Sport

Our Learn to Fly Course is really three courses in one – you choose the license that makes sense for you. Get started with your training and progress toward your first solo, the critical first step for everyone. Then choose the Sport, Recreational or Private Pilot track – it’s all here! Plus, experience has shown that students learn most effectively when the training process is divided into manageable steps. So each module builds on the previous one, creating a building-block approach that saves you time and money.

Modular training

7. Four convenient formats available

Study anywhere, anytime – choose from DVD, online, iPhone/iPad app, or Apple TV app. Your time is valuable, so we offer our complete course in a variety of formats to suit different needs. Choose the one that is best for you. Every feature of our complete course is available in each of the three formats, so you can study on your TV, Mac, PC, iPad or iPhone. Just took the Written Exam
I am rating this a 5. Now, this was NOT the only test aid that I used. I read everything in the FAA Books. I also did the Gleim test book as well. And, I did have some ground lessons with my CFI. But, the Sporty's on-line did a fantastic job of rounding everything out and explaining topics with Videos and great narrative. I loved the on-line testing flexibility as well. I did miss 2 questions on the exam (got a 97%). I do recommend this video series.

Much new information
Just getting back into flying after 20 years. I had the original flying course dvd's from Sportys, but ordered the new "LEARN TO FLY COURSE" ONLINE. There is a lot more information, many new videos, and you have access to the course forever (with upgrades as they occur). Well worth the price.

Great product to refresh knowledge
I have been out of the left seat for seven years after children being born but ready to get back in and up in the air. Wanted to refresh my knowledge prior to working with an instructor and working on check ride. A lot has changed since my original dvds I purchased from Sporty's many years ago. Love the digital format and watching on iPad.

2017 edition, loving it.
I'm about 60% complete so far and will revise my review after I test. So far, it is a really informative program. I contacted Sporty's because wording in one of the sections was unclear, to me anyway; they responded the next day and clarified the material for me. A+ for customer service! I've heard complaints about the use of the 172 to describe basic aircraft systems and yes, they do use the 172 to explain a lot. This should not be a deterrent to buying this program. Most of these small trainer aircraft systems are so similar, it's only a matter of replacing the numbers (airspeeds, flap settings, etc.) with those your instructor is telling you to use on your specific trainer aircraft. As an aircraft mechanic, I can easily disregard information that I know already. For non-tech background students, the extra information should be viewed as additional insight and instruction into aircraft systems. More knowledge in this case is better, even if you never fly the 172. I will recommend this program to new students I meet during the course of my training and those I encounter after I get my PPL.

Passed my PAR (Private Pilot Airplane) Exam today
I was somewhat apprehensive to rely solely on a "Home-Study" course, but I really didn't have time to go to "Ground School". And I'm more of a visual learner anyway. I didn't have time to go to formal training and flight training concurrently, so I decided to give this a try. I had completed the course prior to my first fight lesson and the instructor noticed I was picking up on cues without him having to go into detail explaining everything. His comment was we can move you along! I wanted to take the exam sooner rather than later, as I'm the type that doesn't want multiple test looming over me. My instructor thought I would be ready, but said that I most likely would get a higher score if I waited until we stated doing navigation, cross-country etc. as those things would make better sense when if I completed them in flight prior to taking the exam, but he signed off and said you'll do well either way. I was nervous (I'm not a good test taker) however after the first few questions, I started to "settle-in" and things began to click, with the exception of a few questions I hadn't seen or noticed in the videos or remembered reading in the books either. Highly recommend and it will be a good tool to come back to now and again for a little refresher or pick-up on some key points I missed the first time around. It is like drinking water through a fire-hydrant, I'm almost 60 and being a "student" has a nice ring to it...... HA!!! Who says you cant teach an old dog new tricks!

Great online course
This online course is the best I have seen. Other companies may off the same title course, however, the quality and comprehensiveness is no where near Sporty's.

1)Will this course enable me to pass the oral portion of the FAA test as well?
2)How does it help with the flight portion of the test? Does it take you thru the steps of flying the aircraft?
Thanks in advance for your answer.
Neil P on Jan 6, 2017
Can I also use the iPhone/iPad app if I only buy the online version? Or do I have to buy both the online and the iOS version in order to watch the videos on both my PC and my iPhone?
A shopper on Sep 5, 2016
BEST ANSWER: I purchased the learn to fly course in June and I can watch it from any browser, any time, I just have to sign in. I didn't know about the app. I just downloaded it and it won't let me sign in to see all the videos. I can see enough that I can tell it's all the exact same thing from the browser.
Is this ground school acceptable?
A shopper on Jul 11, 2016
BEST ANSWER: I'm not sure what "acceptable" is in this context, so I'll address a couple of them:
1)Do the FAA testing centers accept the Sporty's Certificate of Completion? Yes.
2)Is the training sufficient to pass the test? Yes. I just finished with the video training and practiced the questions until I mastered them. I scored a 98% on the FAA Test (missed one question).
3)Are the videos any good? Absolutely. They add a lot of context to the questions that you can't get by just reading the questions and memorizing the answers.
4)Are the test questions identical to those on the test? Not exactly. Some are, some are different. For example, no practice question addresses the test question that asks about the Mode required on the transponder when squawking 1200. The answer is to set the transponder to "Mode 3/A Code 1200". It was the only question I missed.

I hope this answers the question.

3)
Does it have a quiz at the end of each section or chapter?
A shopper on Jul 15, 2016
BEST ANSWER: There are short quizzes (2-3 questions) roughly every other video. These questions do not effect the progress of your lessons if answered incorrectly. They are there to help you.
For the online format how long is the material available to you?
Darrell A on Aug 22, 2016
BEST ANSWER: There is no expiration date - you get free updates delivered automatically.
Can I also watch the videos on my iPhone if I buy the online version? Or do I have to purchase both the online and the iPhone version in order to watch the videos on both my PC and my iPhone?
A shopper on Sep 5, 2016
BEST ANSWER: I am not sure but the online version just needs a browser to access the online web url, So you can use Safari or Google chrome on your Iphone (instead of the app). It should work, i think but I have not tried it myself. You may want to call them just to be sure.
The system will not allow me to edit my question, so I will ask again.
Have the issues been addressed about the quizzes not matching up with the videos?
Jon Q. on Sep 9, 2016
BEST ANSWER: I have not had any problems with questions matching the videos. I have only observed one issue. I could not find the refered to airport on a map. This was a great course. I definately picked up many tips.

I currently have the pilots handbook of aeronautical knowledge and Airplane Flying Handbook. Will I need to purchase other books or products to go along with the Sportys Private Pilot Online Training curriculum? I'm trying to decide if I should get the kit since I already have two of the books.
Thanks
