A chance conversation leads to a career in aviation
Just one year ago, Ethan Barker knew almost nothing about aviation. Today, he is working toward his instrument rating, is preparing for commercial training, and has his sights set on a career as a professional pilot—all thanks to a series of unexpected conversations that changed the course of his life.
Ethan, of Sevierville, Tennessee, is the latest recipient of Sporty's $2,500 Pilot Training+ Scholarship, which he plans to use to help fund the flight time required for his Commercial Pilot Certificate.
Until recently, Ethan had assumed that aviation was only for people with family connections or an "in" with the industry. That perception began to change when a friend, who flies KC-130s, suggested that flying might be a good fit for Ethan. After praying about the opportunity with his wife, another unexpected connection followed. Over coffee, a visiting member of his church—a flight instructor—encouraged Ethan to explore aviation.
"It made me realize I could be the first person in my family to become a pilot," Ethan said.
He began flight training in July 2025 at the CAVU Pilot school at Knoxville Downtown Island Airport (KDKX), earning his Private Pilot Certificate in the spring. Now, about 15 hours into instrument training at Knoxville Flight Training Academy, Ethan recently switched to Sporty's Pilot Training+ membership for his instrument ground school and plans to begin commercial training immediately after earning his instrument rating.
Flying primarily in a Piper PA-28, Ethan trains three to four evenings each week while balancing work and family life. He and his wife were married last October and are committed to investing in his aviation future together. Although he is still exploring where his career might lead, he is drawn to opportunities that combine flying with serving others, including the possibility of missionary aviation.
"I don't deserve it any more than anyone else," Ethan wrote in his scholarship application. "I love to fly, and I love to serve others through my love of flying."
