The 5 Ts still work, but they were designed for an era when IFR navigation required more manual setup, timing, and cross-checking. In today’s cockpit, especially with moving maps and integrated avionics, pilots benefit from a broader situational scan rather than a fixed sequence of tasks. One useful modern alternative is the CAPERS check.

Flying in south Florida recently, I heard a Baron on an IFR flight plan call on 121.5 asking other pilots for help finding the correct ATC frequency. Apparently somewhere along the way, contact had been lost during a handoff, and the pilot wasn’t sure who he should be talking to next. It’s more common than many pilots realize and has happened to me on multiple occasions.

At our home airport (I69), the traffic pattern stays busy—especially with our flight school airplanes. It’s common to have multiple airplanes in the pattern, a steady stream of radio calls, and a lot happening in a short amount of time. For many student pilots, that’s where things start to feel overwhelming.

If you’re on final, slightly high, a touch fast, maybe not perfectly lined up, your first instinct is often to try to “fix” it. After all, we don’t want to fail, especially after a good pattern. That’s exactly when you should start thinking about a go-around. Waiting too long usually comes down to ego and fear of “failure” or the hope you can salvage the landing—and that’s when things get tricky.

Trying to follow an instruction you don’t fully understand or aren’t ready to execute can create a lot more risk than politely declining. Ask for clarification, request an alternative, or stick to something you can handle safely.

At the flight school dispatch desk or planning room, you’ll often hear it: a group of students and/or instructors gathered around, checking their phones and watch the winds, asking, “Is this too much for me?” or “Can we find another runway better aligned?” The POH lists a demonstrated crosswind component, but that number doesn’t answer the real question.

First, you need both competence and confidence. Competence means you can handle navigation, flight deck management, and abnormals without prompting. Confidence means you trust your judgment (training) when something unexpected happens.

Early in flight training, checklists are everything. You’re unfamiliar with the airplane, unfamiliar with the flow of a flight, and still figuring out what needs to happen and when. In that phase, using the checklist as a step-by-step to-do list isn’t just acceptable, it’s exactly what you should be doing. But as you gain familiarity, many of the required actions become second nature. You know where things are, you understand the sequence, and you’re able to anticipate what comes next. Yet many students continue using the checklist the same way they did on day one—reading, doing, then reading again—often with their head down and their attention divided.

Whether it’s a student pilot or a seasoned pilot accomplishing a flight review, the pattern of getting behind the airplane is remarkably consistent. Things are going fine until multiple small tasks pile up at once. By the time the pilot notices, they’re already chasing airspeed, altitude, or a clearance.

Let’s be honest—these days, the only reason most of us would get lost in the air is if our iPad died (and we forgot the charger) or it overheated halfway through the flight. Even with GPS and moving maps, it can happen. And when it does, it’s surprisingly easy to feel a little helpless.

The key is to stay calm, rely on your remaining tools, and follow a logical plan.
