What's the best way to study for the IFR written?

The IFR Written test consists of 60 questions randomly selected from the FAA’s testing batch covering multiple categories of Instrument Flight. A 70% score is required to pass the test. The categories are:

  • Air Traffic Control Clearances and Procedures
  • Emergency Operations
  • Flight by Reference to Instruments
  • Instrument Approach Procedures
  • Navigation Systems
  • Preflight Preparation
  • Preflight Procedures

You should study the materials identified by your flight instructor or included in a home-study course. Sporty’s online courses featured a dedicated test preparation module with interactive tools. Users may create unlimited study sessions from a proprietary database of thousands of test questions. Plain English explanations are written by Sporty’s team of CFIs. Detailed analytics show users which areas need the most help, and allow you to study only the questions you’ve missed. Then, you may take an unlimited number of practice tests that simulates the real knowledge exam.

Chris caught the aviation bug at the age of seven when he was able to sit in the cockpit of a 737 between flights, thanks to his aunt working at a large airline. Countless balsa wood flyers and multi-stage rockets later, he enrolled in the Aviation Technology Program at the University of Cincinnati and successfully turned a fascination into a career. “One of my most memorable flights was flying my dad to a local airport with a restaurant just off the ramp known for their generously portioned ribs. I’ll never forget that day with passenger #1.” As the Director of Search Marketing at Sporty’s, Chris is tasked with managing online advertising and search engine optimization but he still loves to search for new products.
