Remembering Hal Shevers: A Legacy of Leadership and Aviation Excellence

Reflecting on a career that transformed Sporty’s into a cornerstone of general aviation.

It is with profound sadness that we announce the passing of Hal Shevers on Tuesday, May 12, 2026. Founder and longtime chairman of Sporty’s, Hal was a pioneering force in pilot training and a beloved leader in the aviation community. Hal’s life’s work shaped the landscape of general aviation for more than six decades.

Hal’s journey began as a mechanical engineering student at Purdue University, where he earned his private pilot certificate as a member of the Purdue Flying Club. After graduation, he combined his technical skills and his love of flying to launch what would become Sporty’s Pilot Shop by selling, from the trunk of his car, a small radio that picked up airport control tower transmissions. This innovative, entrepreneurial venture eventually grew into the world’s largest pilot shop and a leader in product development, from cutting-edge ADS-B receivers to pilot-friendly radios.

Hal was a pioneer in pilot education, creating one of the first three-day ground school courses in the early 1960s, traveling the country in general aviation aircraft to teach ground school to pilots nationwide. His teaching extended to thousands of pilots through Sporty’s Academy, the FAA-approved Part 141 flight school that he founded to provide in-person instruction and industry-leading online courses. His dedication to training safe, savvy aviators became the cornerstone of Sporty’s mission. As Hal was fond of saying, “Without a freshman class, in just three years, there won’t be a senior class,” underscoring his lifelong commitment to nurturing the next generation of pilots.

Beyond business, Hal was deeply rooted in community service and youth development, carrying his Eagle Scout values into decades of support for the Boy Scouts and Aviation Exploring programs. He was recognized with multiple honors, including the prestigious Silver Beaver Award, and was inducted into the National Association of Flight Instructors Hall of Fame in 2007.

Hal’s impact extended far beyond Sporty’s Pilot Shop. He transformed Clermont County Airport into a premier general aviation hub, fostering partnerships with many organizations, including the University of Cincinnati, and building a thriving aviation community that will carry forward his legacy.

John Zimmerman, Sporty’s President & CEO, reflected on his friend and mentor: “Hal’s passion and dedication transformed Sporty’s from an idea into a great American business story. As an employee-owned company, we remain committed to his original vision: create uniquely high quality products and back them up with friendly, helpful service.”

Hal Shevers leaves behind a rich legacy of innovation, education, and community spirit that will continue to inspire aviators around the world for generations to come. He is survived by his wife, Sandy, with whom he shared more than 60 years of marriage, and who was a constant through his life and career. Our thoughts are with Hal’s family, friends, and all who were touched by his extraordinary life and career.
