Ask a CFI: How do I schedule my FAA knowledge test?

Scheduling your FAA knowledge test is easier than you might think. The FAA uses PSI Services to administer all airman knowledge tests, and appointments are made online.

Start by creating an account on the PSI FAA testing website. Once you're logged in, you can select your exam, search for a nearby testing center, and choose a date and time that works for your schedule. Many flight schools and FBOs serve as testing centers, so there's a good chance you'll find one close to home.

Before scheduling, make sure you have the required authorization to take the test. For most student pilots, this is an endorsement from a flight instructor or a graduation certificate from an approved home-study course. You'll also need a valid government-issued photo ID when you arrive for your exam.

The testing fee is paid online during the scheduling process. On test day, plan to arrive early so the testing center can verify your identification and eligibility before you begin.

Once your appointment is on the calendar, the only thing left to do is keep studying. Good preparation is the best way to walk into the testing center with confidence.
